Failure to receive renewal registration does not relieve obligation to purchase tags by your respective birthday deadline.

This office is not responsible for renewal notices, tags, or decals lost in the mail.

Vehicle owner must present a valid Georgia Driver’s License or state-issued ID matching the registration address to register or renew.

Checks must be payable to "Clayton County Tax Commissioner" and must reflect a current Clayton County address.

Ad valorem taxes are due each year on all vehicles (even if non-operating) unless registration is canceled beforehand.

To avoid penalties, you must cancel vehicle registration (Form MV-18J) prior to canceling your vehicle insurance.

Taxes cannot be computed over the phone for Conversion Vans, Motor Homes, Trailers, Trucks, or Tractors.

Emissions inspections are required in Clayton County for 1994–2015 model years under 8,500 lbs (refer to Clean Air Force).

Seniors aged 65+ with vehicles 10+ years old driven under 5,000 miles/year may qualify for an annual emission waiver.

Late Penalties & Deadlines

All applications must be received by your appropriate deadline or late charges will apply: 10% of the tax amount ($5.00 minimum) plus a $5.00 Tag Penalty.

You have exactly 30 days from the date of purchase to register a newly acquired vehicle. For shared ownership, deadlines are based on the first owner listed. For leased vehicles, registrations align with the lessee's birthday.
